Bryant lends a hand.

Yesterday was the 7-hour travel day for all of us, both students and chaperones of the ASB trip. We left Bryant around 9:30 in the morning and was D.C. bound around 5 in the afternoon. I was exhausted since I didn't sleep at all in the car ride over so that resulted in me falling asleep around midnight which is rare for me!

Today at 8 a.m. was the start of breakfast and the day's worth of service. In the morning hours, we are helping with the packaging and delivery work at Food and Friends. I was able to pack today and came to get a greater appreciation for my ability to eat what I want and when I want to. The food care packages are for members of the community who qualify as a result of their illness whether it be AIDS, HIV, or something of the like. I was proud to be a part of 12,000 people that Food and Friends has as volunteers annually.

Little Sisters of the Poor is where a couple hours of our afternoon is invested, post. lunchtime. I've volunteered at the branch in Pawtucket, Rhode Island last year as another program so I had a good idea of what I would be working with. After a tour of the facility and the back story was given about the Little Sisters of the Poor, it was time for bingo with the residents. Something that was so simple like sitting down to play this game and talk to them meant so much. It reminded me so much of how I went to visit my grandma when she was in a nursing home and how she would smile at me like the residents did today!

We end our afternoons with St. Anthony's church after care program and for anyone who knows me knows that I'm obsessed with children. I used to babysit and assist at a daycare before college so it was nice to be able to come back to that again. I was blessed to have the Pre-K to K group to work with. In the whole ASB experience, a 4-year old boy by the name of Benjamin was the most touching to me. His innocence reminded me about how much we take our youth for granted and just rush to grow up when we are little. He reminded me to cherish where I am now and when I am young.

In my opinion, there were hidden messages behind all of the service activities that we completed today and all of which were moving. I can't wait to work with these three organizations again in the next two days!
